The right necklace length changes the way a piece sits entirely. The very same necklace looks one way when it ends just below the neck and quite another when it falls to chest level. In this guide we show you step by step how to measure your own neck at home and which length will suit you best.
How do you measure your neck at home?
All you need is a tape measure (a tailor's tape) or a piece of string:
- Wrap the tape around your neck at the height where you would like the necklace to sit.
- Neither too tight nor too loose — leave enough room for a finger to slip in comfortably.
- Note the measurement down in centimetres. If you used string, lay it on a straight ruler and measure it.
This measurement is the shortest length at which a necklace will sit snugly around your neck. If you want the necklace to fall towards your chest, choose a longer length from the table below.
Guide to necklace lengths
The image below shows where the standard necklace lengths fall on the neck and chest. Compare the value you measured at home with this guide and you will easily find the length that suits you best.

Which length suits you?
- If you want to emphasise your neckline: lengths between 45 and 55 cm create a vertical line at the neck and give a slender, elongated look.
- With high-necked clothing: matinee and opera lengths fall over the collar and look more balanced.
- For layering: wearing two or three necklaces of different lengths together (for example choker + princess + matinee) gives a rich, layered look.
- With necklaces that carry a pendant (a locket or a stone): the weight of the pendant pulls the necklace down a little; allow for that and you may want to go half a size shorter.
A small note
Necklace length is the total end-to-end length of the chain, clasp included. If a necklace has a locket or a drop, the point at which the piece ends on the body sits a few centimetres lower than that length.
