The detail most often overlooked when choosing a ring is the correct size. A ring one size too large slips off the finger, while one size too small will not go on at all. The good news: you do not need to visit a jeweller to find your correct size — you can work it out at home in a matter of minutes with a ribbon or a thin piece of string.
Measuring your size with a ribbon
Follow the four steps below to measure the circumference of your finger with ease:
- Wrap: Wind a thin ribbon or piece of string around the knuckle of the finger you will wear the ring on, neither too tight nor too loose.
- Mark: Use a pen to mark the point where the two ends of the ribbon meet.
- Flatten & Measure: Open the ribbon out, lay it on a straight ruler and read the length up to your mark in millimetres. This value is the circumference of your finger.
- Check the Chart: Compare the circumference you measured with the chart below to find your ring size.

Find the circumference of your finger in millimetres in the left-hand column; the value opposite it is your ring size.

Example: a circumference of 55 mm corresponds to roughly a US size 7. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one.
Tips for an accurate measurement
- Measure in the middle of the day. Fingers are slimmer in the morning and thicker in the evening and in warm weather. Midday gives the most balanced result.
- Take the knuckle into account. The ring has to pass over your knuckle. If your knuckles are on the larger side, measure over the knuckle as well and choose a value midway between the two.
- Wide bands fit more snugly. With thick, wide designs, going half a size up makes for a more comfortable fit.
- Do not measure when you are cold. When your hands are chilly your fingers become slimmer and the measurement comes out too small.
